Description
Suprax, a cephalosporin antibiotic, is prescribed for bacterial infections of the chest, ears, urinary tract, and throat and for uncomplicated gonorrhea.
Suprax can be taken with or without food. If the medication causes stomach upset, take it with meals. Food, however, will slow down the rate at which medication is absorbed into your bloodstream.
It is important that you finish taking all of this medication even if you are feeling better, in order to obtain the medicine's maximum benefit.
Ingredients
SUPRAX (cefixime) is a semisynthetic, cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration. Chemically, it is (6R,7R)-7-[2-(2-Amino-4-thiazolyl)glyoxylamido]-8-oxo-3-vinyl-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid, 72-(Z)-[O-(carboxymethyl)oxime] trihydrate. Molecular weight =507.50 as the trihydrate. Chemical formula is C16H15N5O7S2?3H2O.
SUPRAX is available in scored 200 mg and 400 mg film coated tablets and in a powder for oral suspension which when reconstituted provides 100 mg/5 mL.
Recommendations
Suprax is indicated in the treatment of the following infections when caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms:
- Otitis Media caused by Haemophilus Influenzae (lactamase positive and negative strains, Moraxella (Branhamella) Catarrhalis (most of which are lactamase positive) and S. Pyogenes.
- Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis caused by S. Pyogenes. Suprax is generally effective in the eradication of S. Pyogenes from the nasopharynx; however, data establishing the efficacy of Suprax in the subsequent prevention of rheumatic fever are not available. Penicillin is the only drug with proven efficacy in the prophylaxis of rheumatic fever.
- Acute Bronchitis and Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis caused by Streptococcus Pneumoniae and Haemophilus Influenzae (beta-lactamase positive and negative strains).
- Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections caused by E. Coli and Proteus Mirabilis.
- Uncomplicated Gonorrhea (cervical/urethral) caused by Neisseria Gonorrhoeae (penicillinase- and non-penicillinase producing strains).
Precautions
IF YOU HAVE HAD A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION to a cephalosporin antibiotic (such as Ceclor, Keflex, Ceftin, Duricef) or a penicillin antibiotic (such as amoxicillin, ampicillin), contact your doctor or pharmacist BEFORE TAKING THIS MEDICINE.
IF YOU EXPERIENCE difficulty breathing or tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately. Do not take any more of this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so. If your symptoms do not improve within a few days or if they become worse, check with your doctor.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Caution should be used in the elderly since they may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug.
